Engraving Brass Bells: A Meaningful Project That Pushed Precision to New Levels

Every engraving project presents its own unique challenges, but some stand out not only for their technical demands — but also for the meaning behind them. Recently, I had the pleasure of working on a very special request: engraving saint names on small brass hand bells for a family ceremony.

This project combined careful setup, fine-tuned laser adjustments, and a deep sense of purpose. The finished bells turned out beautifully and served as lasting keepsakes for a meaningful occasion.

A One-of-a-Kind Request

A client reached out with a heartfelt idea — she wanted several 2-inch brass hand bells engraved with the names of saints for an upcoming family ceremony. Each bell would represent a different saint, making them not just decorative but symbolic.

To ensure the project went perfectly, she even provided a sample bell for testing. That allowed me to experiment with the setup, engraving depth, and laser focus before working on the final pieces.

While the bells were small, their curved surfaces presented a big challenge. Brass can be tricky to mark evenly, especially when the engraving area curves away from the laser’s focal point.

The Engraving Process

After evaluating the best way to secure the bells for engraving, I decided to disassemble each bell to separate the top from the base and clapper. This made it easier to position them securely under my fiber laser, which I use for engraving metal materials like brass, stainless steel, and aluminum.

Each bell was then carefully propped on its side to allow the laser to mark along the curved surface. Because the bells were rounded, I had to adjust the laser’s focus dynamically across the engraving area — slightly refocusing for letters at the edges of each name to keep the engraving consistent in depth and clarity.

It was a delicate process that required patience and precision, but that’s part of what makes projects like this so rewarding.

The end result was a crisp, even engraving that followed the natural contour of each brass bell. The golden surface of the metal contrasted beautifully with the engraved letters, creating a timeless and elegant look.

Why Brass Engraving Requires Special Care

Brass is a beautiful but challenging metal to engrave because of its reflective nature and curved surfaces. Laser engraving works by focusing concentrated light on a specific area, and even small variations in height or reflection can affect the outcome.

Using a fiber laser gives me the ability to finely control engraving power and focus, making it possible to get sharp, consistent markings even on rounded or reflective items like these bells.

That flexibility is one of the main advantages of laser engraving — it allows me to personalize a wide variety of materials and shapes, from flat tumblers and plaques to contoured metal pieces like this project.

Adding Meaning to Every Detail

This project was about more than technique. Each bell carried special significance for the client’s family — they were part of a ceremony celebrating faith and remembrance. The engraved saint names made every bell personal, each one representing a story and connection.

When projects have deep meaning like this, I always approach them with extra care. It’s an honor to know that my work can help families create lasting symbols of their traditions and beliefs.

The Finished Bells

After completing the final engravings, I carefully reassembled each bell. The finished pieces gleamed with a warm brass tone and featured the engraved saint names clearly visible along the side.

The client was delighted with how they turned out — and for me, it was one of those projects that reminded me why I love what I do. Every engraving tells a story, and this one was truly special.
