Every once in a while, a project combines both, and that’s exactly what happened with a recent engraving project for Union Adventist University. A customer brought me a handcrafted wooden tray that was unlike anything I had engraved before. The tray wasn’t purchased from a store or ordered from a catalog. It had been made from a tree that had fallen during a storm on the university’s campus. Rather than allowing the wood to go to waste, members of the university transformed it into meaningful keepsakes that would continue telling the story of the campus for years to come. This particular tray was destined to become a retirement gift, making the project even more meaningful. Some engraving projects go beyond creating a personalized gift or business sign. Occasionally, they become part of a community’s history. Those are the projects that make this work especially rewarding. Recently, I had the opportunity to create a custom cedar sign for the Johnson Cabin Museum in Blue Springs, Nebraska. The museum is an important part of the community’s heritage, and the new sign was designed to welcome visitors while helping tell the story of one of the town’s historic landmarks. Seeing the finished sign installed at the museum made this project particularly satisfying, knowing it will be enjoyed by residents and visitors for years to come. The customer wanted something that would complement the rustic character of the Johnson Cabin Museum while remaining easy to read and attractive from a distance. Sometimes the biggest challenge in a custom engraving project isn’t the design, it’s the timeline. Whether you’re preparing for a tournament, employee recognition event, fundraiser, or special presentation, deadlines matter. Recently, I had the opportunity to partner with Lincoln Federal Savings Bank as they celebrated an incredible milestone, 120 years in business. To commemorate the occasion, they wanted to do something special for their employees by providing custom engraved Yeti tumblers and coffee cups. Rather than giving everyone the exact same gift, they took personalization one step further. Every employee was invited to choose what they wanted engraved on their drinkware. Some selected their name, while others chose a nickname, initials, a favorite saying, or a phrase that had personal meaning. Weddings celebrate the beginning of a new chapter, and the best gifts are often the ones that become part of that story for years to come. One of my recent projects at Clocktower Creations was a wonderful example of this.
